Eating and drinking with aligners: what's allowed

Why trays come out to eat, what you can safely drink with them in, and how to stop meals and snacks from eating your wear time.

Updated June 17, 2026

The rule is short and it almost never changes: trays out to eat, water only with them in. Everything else is the detail of how to live with that without losing wear time.

Why trays come out to eat

Two reasons. Chewing with aligners in can crack or warp them — they're not built to take bite force. And food trapped between trays and teeth bathes your enamel in sugar and acid for hours, which invites decay exactly where you can't easily clean.

So aligners come out for every meal and snack, no exceptions.

What you can drink with them in

  • Water — always fine, and it helps keep your mouth clean.
  • Cool, clear, sugar-free drinks are lower-risk, but water is the safe default.

What to keep out:

  • Hot drinks — coffee and tea can warp the plastic.
  • Anything coloured — coffee, tea, red wine, and fizzy drinks stain trays.
  • Anything sugary or acidic — it sits against your teeth under the tray.

If you wouldn't want it pooled against your teeth for an hour, take the trays out.

The hidden cost: lost hours

Every meal and snack is time your trays are out. That's fine — it's built into the 20–22 hour target. The problem is grazing: a coffee here, a snack there, trays sitting in a case all afternoon. Those scattered minutes are where wear time quietly disappears.

A couple of habits fix most of it:

  • Eat in defined windows instead of all-day grazing.
  • Trays back in the moment you finish — not after you've tidied up.
  • Brush or at least rinse before they go back in.

To see how those out-times add up across treatment, the wear time calculator does the math. And if grazing is eating your hours, here's how to stay on track.

Common questions

Can I eat with my aligners in?
No. Chewing can crack or warp the trays, and trapped food bathes your teeth in sugar and acid under the plastic. Take them out for every meal and snack.
What can I drink with aligners in?
Water is always safe. Avoid hot drinks (they warp the plastic), coloured drinks like coffee, tea and red wine (they stain), and anything sugary or acidic (it sits against your teeth).
Do I have to brush before putting aligners back in?
Ideally yes, or at least rinse. Sealing food and sugar against your teeth under a tray for hours is what causes decay and staining, so a quick clean before reinserting matters.
